Jay,

if you install a NW - SE loop of similar size you could try the
"two-loops-eight-nulls" trick. Only two DPDT relays are needed in addition to
the usual K9AY relays. One relay to put both loops in series and another one to
reverse the polarity of one of the loops. The series connected loops act as a
two-turn loop with a virtual winding plane at 45 degrees w.r.t. the actual
loops. Reversing the polarity of one of the loops gives "the other" 45 degree
direction. Worked great here but the termination had to be readjusted when
switching between 1 and 2 turns.
