I don't know when the term hacker first appeared, 1970's, maybe earlier,
quite possibly with the beginnings of the DTMF telephone systems, but,
"Hacker", is a very specific term associated with those that analyse
something to figure out how it works. Any item you've ever figured out how
to operate without a manual, you've hacked. Your VCR, ice box, car,
telephone, computer... The term is most often associated with computer
users who "hacked" into the very poorly written software of years gone by to
make it function as intended, often, providing the results in public forums,
many times being hired by the failed company whos product they fixed.

Hackers rarely let themselves be known by name, never ask for money and
there is little recognition of their efforts.

Unlike those who go out of their way to thwart a websites security to
vandalize, steal, et cetera.

True, they have "hacked" the site, but they are NOT hackers..

WE, here, are radio hackers, not to be consufed with theives, pirates, CB
broadcasters and so forth, they are they, we are not, they are the "vandals"
of the spectrum, we are the hackers.

I am a computer hacker since 1979. I do NOT vanadalize websites or steal
personal information stored upon them, that's vandalism.

First I've heard, Kurt. I'm aware of that distinction applied to another
noble employment art -- but LowFERs?
