Tom Rauch, W8JI, has some comments on how the K9AY terminated loop antenna works.

Peter, Jay, JD, and other K9AYers:

Why don't we settle this conflict about how the K9AY antenna actually works by setting up a std K9AY and at a 'safe' distance away set up a loop of equal size plus an E-probe? Add the signals from the loop and E-probe together in the proper phase and amplitude and see if the results aren't exactly the same as with the K9AY. Do I have to volunteer for this one? OK.... but not until we see some 'Ellsworth Warming' :) Actually we saw a temperature above freezing today for the first time in well over a month! ... but unfortunately the prediction for tonight is under 10F :(

Given the inductance of a type 77 core, 70 turns adds up to mega inductance, no? Is there that muct reactance to deal with? Of course the design frequency is unknown, given that lashup, expect low LF capability desired.
