That price sounds very high. Did they think you wanted the Platinum Litz
wire? :-)
When I used to wind my own prototype high frequency transformers for a
living, I made my own Litz wire by running wire several times between two
points -for example, wrapping them between two roof support poles spaced
about 20 feet apart on a factory floor, by just walking around the posts
paying out fine enameled magnet wire, getting two strands per round trip,
then cutting down the bunch of wires at one end and tying it to a hook in
the chuck of an electric drill (the hook being made of a metal clothes
hanger or large guage copper wire) and holding the trigger down until I got
about the number of twists per turn that I thought I needed.
I came out a little better if somebody -a technician at work, or my daughter
when at home, held the wires at the far end of the drill and helped keep the
tension constant.
I think the longest piece of wire I made this way was somewhere between 60
and 90 feet. That's a lot of walking. You could make it longer, but as
length increases, tension while twisting becomes increasingly critical in
order to keep the twisted wire smooth and unbroken at the same time.
It was great to be able to make whatever size Lits wire whenever I needed
it, not having order it or to keep an inventory. The drawbacks to DIY Litz
wire this way is that its twisted to hold it in shape instead of having a
serving (the wrapping over the wire) this means that there is a little more
resistance per unit length and a little less copper per square cm than the
nearly equivalent Lits wire would have.
Happy New Year to all.
