Hi Andy, Lowfers,

The suggestion of using a frozen soft drink container as a coil form for a centre mounted loading coil is quite a good one.  One of my other hobbies is building and experimenting with hi-tech crystal sets, and a lot of us use a basket-weave design for our coils.  They are virtually formless, and have pretty good Q due to having a lower inter-turn capacitance.  Here's a site with some info on them:
