"this ain't 505 or 185 kHz!"
I'll 'second' that statement, John, as a tried and true SAQer. Every time there have been broadcasts at wide time intervals, day or night, I found the signal strength, and the atmospheric noise, to be nearly the same.
For the newbies, my experience points to the 5 to 8ft diam loop to be the best antenna. E-probes seem to copy too much local noise at this portion of the spectrum. Get everything tuned up long before the broadcast begins. There should be some VLF signals close to 17.2K to use as reference signals. I've also used my signal generator, with short antenna as a signal source with good success.... and use a freq counter, if available.
Now if I can only get the final OSB panels on my Ellsworth house by the 10th, so I can partake in the fun. It's getting rather wintery up here and progress is S--L--O--W.

That's noontime here in the eastern US, and VLF copy is entirely possible (this ain't 505 or 185 kHz!). In fact, your local noise background may be lower at mid-day. So, don't stay up all night, and then sleep through lunch, as you could miss the easier shot.
