With todays solid state dividers obtaining 160 - 190khz from an HF crystal is easy. However, if you are going to build a non solid-state transmitter today, where does one (inexpensively) obtain a crystal? There are crystals in the 300 to 400khz range on eBay and it is possible to build a tube type flip-flop to divide by 2, but what did they really do in the early days of part 15 if a really stable transmitter was desired?"

Buy one from International Crystal - they weren't very expensive back then.
