[Lowfer] Introduction and request for help

Hi lowfers,

I've been interested in LF for some time, mostly as a listener. This
interest started when I got a portable shortwave receiver that included
LF reception, and I heard my first NDB. Since then I've logged most of
the NDBs in the Canadian prairies and some further afield, having moved
up from the portable receiver to an Icom R-75.

I would now like to take the next step, and actually create some RF
myself. I've got an advanced amateur radio license, but very little
experience in building equipment. I have built a couple of kits
(Elecraft KX1, Ten Tec 2m-6m transverter etc), and built a CI-V
interface and sound card interface from scratch. I would like to build a
LF transmitter, but I am a little overwhelmed by many of the plans I see
for LF projects online.

I am looking for a good project that would not be too difficult for a
neophyte builder. I'm thinking that the best frequency band to try is
the 160-190KHz band, as Industry Canada allows Low Power License Exempt
operation (1.0W input to the final stage and major antenna
restrictions).

I hope to be able to build up my skills so that when we get a 136KHz
amateur allocation I will be able to use it. I also hope to learn more
about how all this stuff works. ;)

Any suggestions for a good transmitter project?

Thanks,

Sean - VA5LF/VE5SMC
