Andy - this is an excellent solution that many folks overlook when they
complain of their radios not having enough 'sensitivity' on the BCB or
below. In reality I think there are very few radios that are really 'deaf'
on the BCB or below, even the ones that have been deliberately attenuated to
avoid overload and nasty cross-mod. I've always believed that if the
background noise comes up when the antenna is connected (as it will on
almost every radio for this part of the spectrum) then there is no need for
further gain as both noise and signal will be increased by the same amount
if the front-end is opened-up. Chosing to resonate your receiving antenna
(as you have explained here) is a much better solution where definite s/n
improvements can be realized.
