Hi Bill, Lowfers,
I have a small windmill and an array of solar panels which keep
a 760 ampere-hour set of batteries charged up. All of my Ham
gear that is 12 volt runs directly from the batteries, and a Trace
synchronous inverter provides 120 VAC pure sinewave for the
computers, etc.
I also have all of the "essential" circuits of the house tied to the
inverter, so that during grid outages I can still be comfortable,
with heating, water, and some appliances powered up from
the batteries and inverter. If the outage is lengthly and there's
little or no sun or wind, I have a Honda 5 KVA generator to
run things and recharge the batteries.
I'd be happy to provide you with more details if you like.
