See if you can find out what they use at Cape Kennedy.  They have a bunch of
lightning detectors scattered around the space center.

Hi Peter, Lowfers,

What I have in mind is putting up a vertical mast of one form or
another, insulated from ground, and having a means to detect a
buildup of cloud to ground charge for a warning that a storm is
in the area.  I had thought of using what in the old days used to
be called a "plate relay", which has a winding resistance in the
vicinity of 10K ohms or so.  This could be used to sound an
alarm, turn on a light, or whatever.  Whether or not there is
sufficient charge to activate the relay was my real question.
