Let's break it in parts :

   M     means one thousand  =  1000
   CM    means one thousand minus one hundred (the C is *before* the M) = 900
   L     means fifty = 50
   XXX   means three time ten, i.e. thirty  = 30
   V     means five  = 5
   II    means two times one, i.e. two  = 2

Adding all together 1000 + 900 + 50 + 30 + 5 + 2 = 1987, as others
have correctly reported.
