It was a faulty probe cable set. Lashed up another one and Mr. Fluke is reading as spect'd.

I checked the BNC cord and found it OK w/ ohm meter, as it did before, but I also suspected it, as the counter 
would spin off when turned on and that cord (new, JAMECO, with mini clips) was inserted. So I tried one from
