Thanks for the input.
I built a few good size loops back in the 60s, some with feedback for
regeneration. Most of mine were 4-5 foot accross. I worked 100 miles on
189.5 but it was a vert.

There was a paper circulated on the RSGB reflector from one of the U.K.
magazines - it turns out that its impossible
to get enough capture area with a ferrite loop to provide enough signal for
a good signal to noise ratio - no
comparison to a decent air core loop that is several feet across. The RSGB
paper even had a ferrite loop a couple of feet long as you suggest. The
ferrite loops - no matter how big where an order of magnitude worse for S/N.

I have one, lots of gain good for NDBs but not stable enough for QRSS
reception.

Perhaps you can take a building block approach, buy a TCXO, get a
Mini-Circuits mixer some tuned circuits and
wire them up as 'building blocks'
