John,
Interesting observations. Thanks for the background on the LWCA site and e-mail groups, I'm sure that I'm not the only one that was unaware of the history.
HOWEVER, I still don't see a forum as competition for an e-mail list. The forum is more like a library with the capability for substantial sized files neatly organized by category. The web archive of qth or other e-mails doesn't come close. Even if the e-mail reflectors offered unlimited attachments it wouldn't compare to the forum in terms of organization. Another unmet need has been to create a place where you could point a newcomer to. Currently there is some info on the LWCA site, some on Lyle Kohler's site, some on Rik Strobbe's site, some more info on Dave Pick's site etc. Pretty well scattered around the Internet. There is also an opportunity to put new information such as a Part 5 forum that would give the do's and don'ts for applying for an experimental license. For example does anyone here know how to get approval from the FAA Regional and Headquarters Offices to run a Part 5 that overlaps with the NDB spectrum? I thought not!
Let me offer an analogy. The Post Office doesn't feel the need to burn down the libraries because libraries compete for the market for printed matter!
There apparently has been an interest in the forum. I've kept an eye on the numbers checking in and there has been a steady flow since yesterday afternoon, peaking at about 2 dozen users and averaging about half a dozen.
