There was an article similar to what you describe by James Hagan, WA4GHK,
"Reducing Noise In Home LF Receiving Installations," on the LWCA library
pages.  It was originally published in the July 1994 Lowdown.

If your hard drive will spin, you sometimes can recover data by booting with
a Knoppix live CD and moving files to a flash drive.  I've done this when I
couldn't boot from the C drive.

Can anyone poiint me in the right direction towards an article on reduction 
of noise in LF probes by perhaps WA1 someone - i had it in my favorites but 
that part of my brain is getting grayer ever day.

The article had a series of circuits to filter the dc or go around the dc, 
earthing the coax etc.etc.
