Hello Dick,
I calibrate with a accurate known signal source. Any accurate
synthesizer is useful.
Look for ones with a high stability reference oscillator built in or can
use a GPS or Rb station reference.
Adjust your receiver for a 800 Hz offset in a CW mode.
My ICOM IC-703+ uses a CW-R mode and the CW (BFO) offset is menu adjustable
from 600 to 900Hz in steps of 10 Hz.
I inject a clean tone at 800.000 Hz and monitor with Wolf-Gui version
V.62 of 060811, level is about -50 dBm.
The "Wolf configuration" screen has an area for calibration. Enter
800.0 as the desired center freq.
Hit the "CAL" button and Wolf will ask you some questions....
ENTER THE KNOWN REFERENCE FREQ then enter 800.0 and hit OK
ENTER THE DISPLAYED AUDIO FREQ IN HERTZ as read with the cursor in
the main screen.
or the last "f:' value from the WOLF decoder +/- values are
important.....
Hit OK
Next the Sample Rate Calibration screen comes up and say "YES"
Then go back to the main screen hit "CLEAR" and "RESTART" from the
right selections
to clear the screen and to restart the decode fresh
then the MODE pull down menu and the select bottom choice of
"Frequency measurement (RX drift check)"
If you want to keep a record of the cal, do not hit the screen CLEAR button.
Continue to monitor in the main screen.
Either the "waterfall" or the "spectrum display" can be used under the
"tuning scope" pull down window.
Try both to familiarize yourself with the different presentations.
if the "f:" is still off, but you are zeroing in , do another
calibration.
Only do a CAL after all equipment warms for at least a half hour. RX,
signal source, PC, etc.
Watch for awhile. "f: .000" is achievable in my shack., for hours.
But you have to have an accurate and drift free signal source.
Alternate method is to use a known LORAN line.
See: WWW.W1TAG.com for a procedure.
Also with Wolf-Gui V.62, read the help file manual and it's
references to get a better understanding.
Even with that info, I still have to scratch my head.....
