Activity no longer ends during the summer. There was a popular theory 
that long-haul communication died during the summer months, but that has 
been definitely disproved. If you take a look at the logs for my 137 kHz 
operation, http://www.w1tag.com/XESLOG.htm , you'll see a number of 
across-the-pond receptions during the summers. But the static levels can 
be fierce even if the propagation is good, so the more northerly 
stations will have an easier time of it. Short nights do cut into the 
available hours for the long haul stuff. Daytime ground wave 
communication is definitely better in the winter, so that's another 
difference.

So you will find people transmitting and receiving at LF on a year-round 
basis. The more the merrier!
