Sounds like you've found the culprit. I would suggest the series tuned / transformer coupling approach in John's article - that's what I use on my 10' 14T 'Octoloop' and it works very well. I find that for best results on long haul DX a preamplifier is required ahead of the various receivers I use here (Harris RF-590, R75 and HP 3586C).
