--Just a status report - been in the property for 5 days or so now...and
the important things have been done...
Well I'm only going onto the roof at night when the shoes stop melting
on the metal work! Only issues is the additional creepy crawlies that
seem to appear at the same time. There is enough ambient light from
reflection from the sometime clouds to even solder most of the time.
Access is from the 4th and top floor via a 20ft ladder.
I've got a 28T 5ft span loop which now remotely tunes from around
120-270 KHz - pretty high Q and you have to have the tuning dead "on" in
CW and SSB modes otherwise you miss the peak of the audio spectrum
required. Makes that SSCheeoooeeeeuuuuwww noise as you tune thru the
resonance - always a good sign.... The remote tunes preamp can be seen
At http://www.mlecmn.net/~lyle/preamp/preamp.htm I'm using the
MVAM109's varactors.
The second antennae is the probe up on a 15ft fishing pole up above roof
height and out from the property with the outer of the coax grounded to
the lightning conductor...
The loop is set up with a null East/West
I'm guessing the antennas are up at around 65 ft agl - and I'm only a
few feet above sea level as I have a part of a tidal (4ft)canal outside
my window - fish, snakes, and turtles galore. It's a clear shot 360
degrees within reason and above tree height and no local building
obstructions that really count at LF.
Coax's (RG174 type) run over the edge of the building and thru a patio
door and into the shack - Signals feed 2 X R75's or the SDRIQ. I can op
to earth the coax outer again onto the patio door which can (does)
reduce the common mode noise from the shack getting up the coax -
luckily for me the patio doors in this qth are somehow linked to the
buildings earth structure.
Last night was the first night when I could start to compare the
signals (sorry had to stop as I think this building at work has just had
a nearby strike and the LAN went out for a few mins....)
There are no medium or LW signal transmitters on Singapore - Signals are
not that great uV pd even at night on
http://www.asiawaves.net/singapore-radio.htm#mw and so far no Imod or
other nasties seen. My noise floor is now mostly atmospheric even during
the quieter moments and not manmade (hurrah) Loads of NDB's, Navtex and
beacons in the 520Khz range.
I can hear thru the 40 over qrm the same long wave stations from
Mongolia and Russia but I've not listened thru the Eu/USA window/nights
yet. I always miss any Americas window at dusk when I'm out foraging for
food.
I'm delighted with the QTH and noise level - all we need now is some
mutual nighttime and slightly less qrn~ and keep that lightning away
from the property.
