In general...
Selecting the "Reply" button on your email client will create a message
that will reference the original message thread, and appear as one of
the messages in a threaded display.
Usually, the text of the original message that you are replying to is
quoted and already in the reply message, ready for you to trim and snip
to remove anything not absolutely necessary for clarity for your reply,
or allowing you to comment inline with some of the quoted text. Do trim
this quoted text as much as you can. And bottom post any new comments to
maintain reading continuity.
Replying to digest-type messages from a mailing list always breaks
threading as the digest is it's own message thread, the series of texts
in the digest having no relation to the real message number(s) of the
copied posts it contains. Replying to a digest always fragments message
threads, and it is only really useful for those reading and never
replying to list messages. If you want your message to be a part of the
original thread, don't use the digest mode. If you get the original
messages, you can reply and maintain thread integrity.
