Fellow LowFERs,
This clammor about LF's internet presence and the new "gotta-have toy" over those in the box in the corner is not new and I recall it from the recent past with some of the same agents, but that's good. It tells that the issue/s are still in flux and being hammered out by vested and caring persons.
Warren's always cogent thoughts :=) and John's strong presence of organization and enduring efforts of us players, some of whom pop up now and then, sprinkle some dust or candy and slip back into the noise, are well taken. John's to commended for his perspective; Warren for his delivery.
I agree mostly with John's points, as I have in the past, but see too that there is a need that Warren codifies and is supported by others, a need driven in part by modern expectations of "have to have it now, qicker, sooner...". On that point I say, "Can't fight human wants." ( I should add, for long! :-)
But John's point about recording individual efforts for posterity is basic to this A vs. B discussion:
"Thus we return to my original points: Individual efforts are fine;
creativity flourishes that way. I'm not griping about individual efforts,
but looking toward the farther future! I don't think we can afford to do
without at least a minimally organized effort to provide a stable portal
through which others can discover and/or document the broader
state of our hobby."
And--> "We mustn't let one stifle the other."
Bravo!
I for one support LWCA as one essential repository of LF infomation, as I do The LOWDOWN for reporting interesting items/events/lists for further investgation or not. But always find hope in someone willing to run up another flag to test the wind for some new reason. So Hail the new Forum.
Hopefully, this broader interchange on what is "truely" worthwhile today will not dampen those who tirelessly contribute their efforts to Our established LF organization and it's journal. The doers of today or those who closely follow them must recognise the need to organize, record and make available those efforts in a reasonable manner, ie, some on-going journal.
A new endeavor, like a child, is not sufficiently mature to take on that task, but may itself prepare to do so so -- some day.
Cheers -- Peter
