Since you don't have the GPS timing pulses, if you had left SYNC running in
Africam, you might have lost some copy last night. Without the GPS ticks,
you would have to watch the screen until valid copy appeared, then press End
to kill the SYNC process. That way, when the signal dies in a fade, you will
stay synchronized. If SYNC remains on, Africam will produce good copy when
the signal is strong enough, but it will waste a significant amount of time
finding the right timing.
That aside, Jay, Dex and I have reached the same conclusion: that WOLF does
provide superior weak signal and noise performance assuming that you are
willing to work in blocks of time, rather than expecting continuously
updated text. A WOLF QSO requires some time coordination in advance, such
as the 30 minute schedule that Dex and I used. A BPSK QSO can be more
linear, with a normal back-and-forth as long as copy is OK. For beaconing, I
would definitely give the edge to WOLF, though I certainly agree that the
processing is annoying.
