I'm just awed at the effort. All must have been on the roof (peaked!?).
Yeeks, the toll on those shingles! Also sounds like you calc'd those guy
lines well.

Back to Eric's task. I think what all this testimony reveals is that
very large length to dia. ratios are "springy" and prone to failure. So
one way to amend that is to take the springy-ness out of the project,
i.e., the use of a stiffener. Bill uses these for loop joints. Eric
wants to attain 40ft. Let's assume that's using two joined 20ft lengths.
If a 20ft 2x4 were inserted to cover the joint area and beyond, this
might give enough stability for raising.

Another idea, sorta (thinking out of the box - this likely results from
 my late night listening to After Dark AM): A pit is dug with one side
beveled out. The pipe rests in the pit effectively shortening the
portion to pull up (or vertually raising those pulling the guys). Once
vertical and guying arranged but not applied, the pipe if lifted and
taken out of the pit. One has many options, now, for that hole.
