Mike, Tom, that insulated mast was 3 telescoping sections of 4" PVC drain
pipe with 3/4" holes drilled in the top and bottom sections to accommodate
the horizontal portions of the octagonal loop. The break in the lower
horizontal pipe section for the feed was re-enforced inside with a foot long
1/2" ID PVC pipe and a short 1/2" steel rod inside that.
I was able to raise this loop into position without help by tightening the
three support ropes (installed over the trees) one by one. Once installed
the horizontal support ropes (three minimum) are obviously needed to give
the loop lateral stability and the 4" pipe provides only for the vertical
load. The loop is just too heavy to hang from the support ropes alone as
does my Medfer loop. A swivel joint is needed where the pipe attaches to the
support ropes to allow for rotating the loop without causing wear to these
ropes.
As I recall the transmitting gain of this thing was -8db compared to the std
#12ga 50' x 50' loop. Right now it's disassembled and parked in the overhead
pipe rack in the garage.
