Subject: [Lowfer] Bad operating practices/XFX update

Hi,

In looking for sites to learn about/buy ham radios, I stumbled into one
that provides neither (that I can see) but had an ongoing discussion about
"lids". I hope I never QSO any of the folks contributing to this
discussion: in my mind, the only lids on there are the ones calling other
people that.

But in the discussion certain behaviors were pointed out as bad operating
practices, or otherwise lid-like. I was taken aback because some of these
things are such as I have done in this very forum.

For example, "Best regards". I'm not sure what the complaint was about
this regarding lid-ism, but for my part, I picked this up years ago when
working offshore. It was common for us to close Telex messages in this
fashion.

I won't use that phrase again.

Another might be my soliciting receipt confirmation of QSL cards I sent.

And probably many others.

I claim ignorance.

If you see me doing the things that are frowned upon in the ham community,
please let me know. You are all so very nice here that I'd like to take
this opportunity to learn from you rather than get beat up when I start
making those contacts.

Another bad practice might be off-topic posts to this reflector. Ok, in
an opportunity to bring at least a portion of this post on topic: the new
antenna for XFX is moving forward. New estimated return-to-air date is by
Feb 8. I am trying very hard to meet that. Expendable cash is a little
short.
