Technically not backscatter, I think. But the wavefront from your antenna
is fairly broad, and may reflect from the ionosphere at a point that is
enough toward the orientation of his E-W loop to come in well for periods of
time. "Sidescatter," if you will?

Actually, the phenomena you are exploring right now can also be observed at
HF, and have been to some degree in connection with HiFERs. But it's
because of the high resolution tools we use to overcome those "pesky" Part
15 limitations that we are in a position to see some of these effects. I
guess with most hams at HF able to run more power and use more efficient
antennas than we can as LowFERs (most any HF QRPer radiates many times what
we do), there's not much incentive to look at propagation with the same
tools.
It IS lots of fun--even for those of us who have to watch experiments like
this one from the sidelines for the time being.
