Yes, Larry's results with directional loops provide some very interesting
food for thought. And he's at a distance where the surface-wave component
should be getting *very* weak.
I can think of all kinds of other tests to run, such as simultaneous plots
of Mike's signal on three different receiving antennas -- N-S loop, E-W
loop, and omnidirectional vertical. I have enough antennas and more than
enough receivers to do that, and I can set each receiver for a different BFO
pitch so that when the signals are combined, SpecLab will be able to plot
them individually. Would be best if Mike sent a steady carrier or just a
series of dashes, although the ID confirms that I'm really seeing the right
signal. I could also go down to 100 kHz and null out the Baudette Loran
station; then use SpecLab to watch for "echoes" of the pulses that might
tell me how much path difference there is between the surface wave and
skywave signals. All sorts of possibilities. The only thing stopping me is
that I'd rather be building stuff than analyzing all that data :-)
