This discussiom reminds me that there's another technique which might
be considered, namely shooting the stuff from a gun .  The Coast Guard
and others used to (and may still) have guns which could shoot a line a
lot farther than a man could throw it.  Never saw one but one of the
firemen at the station next to our rifle range decided to try it once. 
He put a rod in a 45-70 rifle and attached a light line to it. Tried it
at our Sunday shoot and almost killed himself.  He used a regular load
which blew the rod apart, knocked him to the ground, and really bruised
his shoulder.  A couple of grains of black powder would have been much
more appropriate!  I suspect that a suitable sized sinker could be shot
out of something like a 58 caliber musket [or perhaps a small shotgun
with REDUCED LOAD] with either monofilament line or steel U control line
attached whichever could survive the launch.  This would be easy enough
to try and should be more convenient and accurate.   I have suitable
stuff here but no suitable trees!
