[Lowfer] Sudden Fades?

From reading past comments and looking at some capture files, I see where signals fade abruptly at certain times.  The question I have is whether these are really fades or not?  Since I see that AGC is usually on in these screen shots, isn't it more likely that the local noise floor has jumped?  Even if a couple signals disappear couldn't it be because the ones that stay are only there because they were strong enough to still be above the new noise floor?  Just curious about which is contributing more, an actual drop in Rx signal strength or a rise in the noise floor.
