The actual amount of the HiFER power increase is about 3.6 dB, which can be
fairly significant when you're near the noise threshold. As Bill points out,
however, the typical fading on HF can be much greater than a few dB, even
over short intervals. Doubling your power output may not light up the Argo
screen to blinding levels, but it will make the signal visible for a
slightly greater portion of the time, and will prolong those (usually) brief
intervals when the signal is audible.
