Fine Paul,

I think that Bill Bowers had his big Ferrite Stick wound with a close,
multi-layered coil at the center. Think Bill A. spoke to that once,
saying he had seen it on a visit to the Bill B.'s OK site.

Another old timer, Phil Atchley, KO6BB, in Merced had an outdoor
ferrite ant. w/ balanced pre-amp, though he was into NDBs.

Say Ed, do you know of Phil? He was a regular on the list 3 years ago
but not in past year.

Sad to see: "LowFER beacon LEK is no longer on the air," from Lyle's
site. Hadn't noticed that on prior visits. He seemed to be leaning on
the 136 ham band and expressed disappointment when that folded. Maybe
he'll pick up w/ Part-5 along w/ RB.

Thanks on the input,
Peter

Peter... A few more details,

The loop is wound with litz wire but the first version, was wound
with
magnet wire to get an approximate length needed to resonate.
I hate to waste Litz wire.

It is a single wrap that fills approx. 80% of the core. There is a
tunable
mica that allows about 100 KHz to 200 KHz tuning. This fits in the
""T"
in the middle of the PVC. This allows convenient mounting.

Yes... A preamp is indeed needed since the area of the antenna is so
small.
I used a balanced preamp made with MPF-102's and a 2n3904? to drive
the
coax.

Seems to work ok. Should measure the "Q" one day.
Really its was just something to mess around with, not really a
serious
effort.
