Yep, that is why I bring my handheld LCR meter to the hamfest also. I had to
call Lyle up though to ask his way of determining the core types. 'Clunker'
huh??? LOL!!! Used 'em in the old days also. Those GR bridges on Ebay are
nasty expensive tonight.

This might depend on the type of hand-held LCR. I've had minimal problems
with my meter giving erroneous readings. I DO have many not-so-good memories
of the good old days when using those big old clunker bridges. I bet I can
go through a bunch of unknown cores in a 1/10 of the time it takes to use a
bridge. Another of the advantages of a hand-held is finding cores and
capacitors at swapfests. Matter of fact, that's haw I landed these nice 1"
#61s a couple of weeks ago (3 for a $). Most of the sellers don't know what
the core type is so a meter is a necessity. I've also used my handheld to
aid in buying transmitting micas. Anything leaky gives a high 1/Q reading
and/or the wrong capacity.
