Very interesting Larry. I've never considered that trees might actually
IMPROVE on the performance of an H-field antenna. I've always thought about
simply tolerating the trees when I use Loops. BTW, am I right in thinking
the K9AY is strictly an H-field antenna?
There's some possible H-field modification near your antenna because of the
current flowing from branches to ground via the trunk (~10 kohm of
resistance). One of my planned experiments is to wrap a tree trunk with wire
in order to measure this current. A ring of ferrite might allow a better way
of measuring the current. This would really be a true 'tree antenna' !
BTW on the subject of E-probes and needing to be "in the clear": I would
certainly agree with this theme if we are talking about clearance from other
antennas or metalic objects equal or higher above ground than the probe. In
the woods or in trees I find this rule does not apply.
