FYI
my 756 non pro was used for the IF of my HB converter until we went to
long QRSS over 30 Sec dots. Then the 1 to 2 cycle drift at 4 Mhz was a
PITA
My converter consists of a good Double Balanced mixer. I terminated each
port
at 3 Db. Then used a 4 Mhz clock osc to drive the thing. I coupled the
RF/IF LO into it
direct through the 3 Db pads. It works great down to DC. I could use more
power at
the LO ( 4Mhz clock osc) and planned to add a gain stage but have had
no problems
with overload so I havent done this yet, As a stand alone mixer I then
was able to switch
in different RF stages. I find the Burhams loop amp that I am evaluating
drives the mixer
and I dont need additional amplification in the shack.
The Clock Osc is right on freq, no drift .
Also look into the AMRAD LF converter in a past QST.
I went with the DBM approach as it was what was laying on the floor in
the shop
HAR
I suspect most f the commercial LF converters will be OK for general
listning but not good
for QRSS
