Right. I'm thinking noise pick-up, not to mention the screwed up E-field at 
that location. Have you tried locating the probe in one of the pine trees in 
the front yard? You know, getting a line though the branches near the top 
and pulling it up. No problem with the antenna rod contacting the branches. 
In fact this would probably improve the S/N.
