Reposted here form the National Radio Club e-mail server is
a post about a way to interface any receiver with a 455IF (such
as the Icom R75) to software that allows complete control over
the IF, including filter shapes, DSP, etc.
I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it's now the hottest
thing on my list! If others on the list do try it please post
results here. Also more tips on tapping into the 455khz
IF would be appreciated.
And it's freeware!

The best AM DX receiver might be the one you use to interface with a PC
running DSP software such as the software and IF interface from Vittorio,
IK2CZL. Here is Vittorio's site.

Nick Hall-Patch has a review of Vittorio's software in the April 26, 2003,
issue of the IRCA's DX Monitor. Nick has already implemented the software
using his homebrew receiver and an AOR AR-7030.
It looks pretty impressive, having a software implementation of a full blown
DSP system with continuously variable bandwidth, ECSS, SSB, AGC, and IF
frequency shift. All you supply is an IF signal in the range of 100mV, the
hardware interface and the software do the rest. Think of it as a 21st
century version of the Hammarlund HC-10. Although a 455KHz IF is suggested,
any IF would work, as long as it could be converted down to the 13KHz range
by the interface. Vittorio points out that the software is a work in
progress but it looks very promising.
I ordered a couple of 74HC4060s from Circuit Specialists and and 2 SBL-1
mixers from Dan's Small Parts to interface my Drake R8 with his software.
The hardware interface can be built for less than $20.
Has anyone on the list worked with Vittorio's software?
