Thanks for all the ideas, both on and off the list.

I really like the idea of the push-up mast (for ease) but (and bear with
me here -- I'm only a new ham) these are made of steel.  I know steel is
not the best antenna material...right?  Or is it only stainless that is
poor?  If I'm wrong about that, and it's ok to use steel, would it be best
to run a copper wire along it is the actual antenna (as on my 30' PVC
mast) or just make connections for continuity at the joints (which would
seem to destroy its push-up-ability) ?

I like the aluminum irrigation pipe idea.  The only thing about it (that I
haven't figured out yet) is the base insulation.  A coke (or rum :) bottle
would work for the push-up mast.  Hmmm...perhaps a larger (say one gallon)
bottle would work, if the weight weren't too much?
