Forgot to mention AM. A couple of us built "all-mode" down converters
from 75 meters and got them on the air in all modes. We gave that a try
back in the late 1970's but gave it up as a lost cause for any contacts
beyond about 50 miles. SSB was better than AM, but CW (~15 wpm) reigned
supreme. Best QSO DX here was Mike Mideke at about 220 miles, but CW
beacons were doing great at longer ranges. All that is left right now
is my IZJ beacon which is not on all of the time due to QRM with my
"WWVB clocks", and PLI who is on most of the time. As far as I know all
of the other beacons out here are QRT.
