Wow. BIG lesson in radio.
Remember the heat I complained about in my 128/129 pair final? Well, I
have a paucity of test equipment, but I connected a 1N34 across the leads
of my piece of junk digital multimeter and placed the diode near the wire
coming out of the top of my coil.
The meter read about 7mV when not transmitting. When the transmitter
keyed the meter went up to about 1.5V. I was surprised! I didn't realize
that much voltage would be induced that way.
And my transistors were HOT!
So I moved the alligator clip from the tap it was on (when winding the
245 turn coil I put about half a dozen taps at the cold end, one every 10
turns). The reading went up to over 5 volts!
I moved it again, 12V!
The next tap I tried I got over 22 volts! I was shocked (no pun
intended).
On either side of that tap the voltage was lower, so I'm assuming the
resonant point is either there or close by.
22V is a mzjor improvement over 1.5V anyway! And my transistors are
absolutely cool to the touch.
I just noticed there are a lot of exclamation points in this email.
Sorry. Guess I'm excited.
The signal meter on the old Galaxy 550 through my LF converter is pegged.
So I'm wondering, if the noise will cooperate, if any of you out there
could let me know if you see anything? 185.302 QRSS30...
So now I know this antenna can be made resonant I'll proceed with building
the monster coil ... which won't need to be quite as big as I once
thought.
Please let me know if you can "hear" anything :)
Regards,
Eric
