Awesome. I will look up my test data for the variable inductor I made and
post it on the reflector. I wrote it down in a notebook when I did the
tests.

Why? You're doing pretty well, so far. I like to explain it along the lines
of the loop being a low impedance antenna that is not so sensitive to lossy
stray capacity from surrounding items. The proximity of the trees and the
ground look electrically like a capacitor in series with a resistance
connected to ground and this resistance eats precious power.

BTW Mike, I just installed a variable series inductor in place of the 100pf
variable capacitor to do the tuning for the test loop. I think this was your
idea, originally? I'm anxious to see what happens tomorrow morning when the
sun hits the final box. It's 24 deg right now. The variable inductor is 4T
of #14 wound on a 1/4" slug-tuned coil form.
