I would not say it is coming to an end Eric. But it has certainly changed.
When I got my novice in 1963, every ham I knew was building some portion of
his station- in fact the common thread was a love for electronics, now it is
talking (and fighting) on the air.
You will always find niches of the hams with the "old character"- here on
LF, on EME, 160M, the homebrew and BA groups.
