OK thanks guys. I went out there yesterday again and found the electric is a
mile away and the phone is 1/2 mile away. Now to find out how much to get it
to the property. The powerline would have to run past 3 or so different
properties before it got to the one we would buy so I wonder if the costs
would be assumed onto the property taxes???
I had brought my natural radio receiver with to sniff around first before
searching for the nearest powerline. The deer flys were thick as expected
but what I didn't expect was to hear a deer fly on the receiver!!! I have
heard bugs before but this was a big bug with a big loud sound. I did find
something in the ditch across the road as my receiver picked up a buzz sound
like 60hz when the antenna was parallel to the ditch only. Was there
something down real deep; I don't know. It certainly didn't act like the
power run in the front yard here.

In Minnesota, the underground utility locating service is "Gopher State One
Call", at 1-800-252-1166 or 651-454-0002. Typically they will ask you to put
some stakes in the ground marked "locate", and will be out there in a day or
two to mark all buried utilities.
Another option might be to call the electric utility that serves the area
and tell them you want electric service, but need to confirm availability
before you purchase the property. Maybe they will even provide an estimate
of the installation cost.
