Just after succeeding in getting out a good signal at 100 miles with my
first 50/50 loop, back about 4 years ago, I ran over 2 months of thorough
tests with all different conductor configurations in order to get a handle
on all the variables. Turned out that multiturn loops from 2 to four 4 turns
performed far lower than expected. The far field radiation was proportional
to the number of turns, as the text books indicated (assuming the same loop
current between all versions), but the Rac was much higher than the math
predicted. I concluded, at that time, the losses introduced by the ground
were multiplied by the number of turns. I didn't feel the promimity effect
between conductors was the problem since I spaced them at least 6". I was
always able to achieve better performance by paralleling the turns. What
really put an end to my multi-turn exploration was the discovery that they
were extremely sensitive to de-tuning effects caused by the wind.
