Paul C,

if you take an electrically small square loop, and using the same
circumference, you make it a circle the area increases by 1.27 times. For the
same antenna current the signal increases by 20LOG1.27 = 2.1 dB. The field
produced by a loop is proportional to the area. The shape does not matter.

How about a two-turn loop versus a one-turn loop? You have doubled the area
and therefore you have doubled the radiated field. The radiation resistance
increases by a factor of 4 and therefore the radiated power increases by 4
which is 6 dB. How about if we take the same length of wire that forms the
2-turn loop and make a one-turn loop out of it? Now the loop area doubles and
we get more bang for our buck. Take a square 2-turn loop 1 meter on a side.
The area is 2 sq meters. Now make it into a one-turn loop. It forms a loop 2
meters on a side with an area of 4 sq meters.

  Dave
