Yeah, I'd put my money on the thing working as a loop antenna (well - at 
least two out-of-phase vertical members separated by 1000ft; the horizontal 
portion probably didn't contribute to the distant signal), and most likely, 
Dex was in a side null. As I recall the amount of current flowing in the 
wire was nothing to write home about - considering 300w. The ground 
resistance for the return current would have been a killer.

If this antenna were to be set up right now, and a return wire at 6ft above 
ground were installed, I would drive down there just to make measurements. 
Would think it would radiate a whopping signal!
