Yes, I've been thinking about this. The final box for the test loop is only 
2"x4"x1" but there IS a spot next to the variable capacitor that would allow 
installation of a 3w WW resistor. Luckily there's a couple of extra wires in 
the control cable that can provide the voltage without disturbing the 
current sensing of the Vcc.

The real test would be to turn on the heater an hour before sunrise on a 
similar night and see if this induces the dip in current. This effect is 
always prominent when it's dry and really cold (like last night) and there's 
full sun the next morning.
