Thanks.  I can use all the input I can get.  Currently working on a 
vertical.  This is the first time I've tried to put up a big  
antenna -- I'm surprised at the number of things I've considered using, 
and also at the paucity of good ideas.  I keep thinking there is probably 
something right under my nose that I should be considering ...

I'm wondering how much wind load the top hat will add ... many materials 
would suit for the vertical piece if it weren't for that:  I live in 
Oklahoma and there is nothing to stop the wind as it pours in from Canada 
except for a barbed-wire fence up around Nebraska -- and it's usually 
down.
