16F in Garrison? It is near 40F here which is less than an hour south of
there. Cold to the vertical is anything lower than 32F. The antenna current
really goes up at that magic temp as the temp decreases past that point.
Locally the loop kicks butt on the vertical but out at 900 to 1000 miles,
the vertical and loop signal is nearly identical. Bill measured my field
strength at 42 miles to be 8uv/meter on the loop the other night.
Unfortunately the temps will be near 40F on Sunday so he won't be able to
get any kind of decent readings from the vertical. Hopefully I will learn
something this weekend about measuring field strengths remotely so I can
repeat those tests later this winter on the vertical and loop to compare
apples to oranges. Of course if and when the FCC grants me the license so I
can try burning down the trees, I can do field strength tests out a long way
from here.

Now the big question for you, are you going to haul ass up here for a noon
lunch at the farm? It would be highly recommended that you do, as there will
be a few guys there from the region. The roads are perfectly clear up here
so you can drive safely with a heavy right foot. LOL!!!

I gotta ask you what you consider "real cold", Mike. About 16 degrees in
Garrison right now ... I realize it gets much colder than that up there,
but surely 16 is a decent start, huh?
