Yes, this is a very good solution and became possible with
high voltage switching semiconductors.

The link between the (poorly regulated in terms of frequency)
greek grid and the italian grid is DC.

It's also worth mentioning that, in contrast to AC transmission
lines, DC lines can store some energy in the capacitor formed
between the two conductors. I am not sure if this feature improves
system stability.
